Following the model of recent Portuguese medical schools, Católica Medical School counts with health research units by its opening date, particularly the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS). CIIS is active across three regional centres (Lisbon, Porto and Viseu) and was rated by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) as Very Good.
Also in the health area and equally recognized by FCT, UCP has the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), with the statute of Associated Laboratory since 2004, present in the Oporto Regional Centre and was classified by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) with Excellent.
Católica Medical School has a strong science-based learning component so it has the challenge of developing a strong research component, taking advantage of the scientific knowledge created at CIIS and creating not only new lines and research groups but also a new institute dedicated to research. With this goal in mind, a new Medicine research platform at CIIS has been developed, as well as its expansion to the Sintra campus.
In this sense, Católica Medical School integrates two research centres at the moment:
- CatólicaMed, a platform that is part of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS), geared towards clinical and translational research;
- Católica Biomedical-Research Institute (CBI), which seeks to promote health through biomedical research understanding the biology of health and disease, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative processes.
