On September 23th, Católica Medical School hosted the III Forum on Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, under the theme “Artificial Intelligence in the Patient Journey.” The event brought together experts, researchers, healthcare professionals, engineers, and students to reflect on the impact of Artificial Intelligence across the different stages of healthcare.

Throughout the day, the programme fostered discussion on the application of Artificial Intelligence from the early stages of the patient journey - namely risk assessment, diagnosis, and clinical decision support - through to its use after diagnosis, including treatment, monitoring, and continuity of care.

The Forum featured two keynote lectures. Henrique Martins, MD, PhD, addressed the topic “AI liability: the role of doctors and engineers,” while Hugo Silva, PhD, presented “AI and the Rise of the Invisible Doctors.” The programme also included oral presentations, poster sessions, and two thematic panels, providing opportunities for project presentations, knowledge sharing, and discussion among participants from different fields.

The first panel, dedicated to “AI at the beginning of the patient journey,” explored topics such as the use of data to support decision-making, the development of a digital twin for high-frequency users of the Portuguese National Health Service, and diagnostic accuracy in cardiovascular medicine.

The second panel, “AI after diagnosis,” focused on treatment, monitoring, and continuity of care, featuring contributions from Francisca Leite, PhD, and Pedro Gouveia, MD, PhD.

By hosting the third edition of the Forum, Católica Medical School reinforced its role as a meeting point for Medicine, Engineering, research, and technological innovation, fostering reflection and knowledge sharing on the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating Artificial Intelligence into the patient journey.
