“Through this program, we aim to instill in you a passion for medicine!” With these words, António de Almeida, Dean of Católica Medical School, welcomed more than 400 participants, including secondary school students and their parents, who attended the School’s Open Day.
Over the course of a morning/afternoon, this initiative provided participants with an immersive experience of the academic environment, allowing them to gain first-hand insight into what it is like to study Medicine at one of Portugal’s leading institutions.
During the event, held on April 18, participants had the opportunity to attend interactive sessions, learn about the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) teaching approach, and take part in practical activities across the school’s various facilities. These included the SkillsLab (a skills laboratory where students work with simulated patients), the ResearchLab (a laboratory dedicated to developing scientific research skills), and the AnatomyLab (an anatomy laboratory that promotes anatomical study through models, interactive classes with digital tools, and tutorials).
Throughout the day, students and faculty members were available to speak with participants, answer questions, and share perspectives on the academic journey and career opportunities in Medicine.
For António Almeida, initiatives like this play a key role in guiding young people: “Secondary school students need to have the opportunity to experience the reality of a medical school up close, not only academically but also on a personal level. This direct contact allows them to make more informed decisions about their future, understand the demands of the program, and connect with a student-centered teaching model that places strong emphasis on the human dimension of Medicine.”
Applications for the Integrated Master in Medicine are open until June 15, 2026.
