António Medina de Almeida is the new president of the European Haematology Association (EHA). The director of the Clinical Haematology Service of Hospital da Luz Lisboa and director of the Medical School of Católica University took office during the annual congress of this institution, which was held between 7 and 11 June, in Frankfurt, and will perform functions for two years.
The European Haematology Association is the second major haematology association at world level, the first being the American Haematology Association (AHA). This last congress counted with the participation of over 15 thousand participants. António Medina de Almeida succeeds in office to Elizabeth McIntyre (Paris University).
“It is a great honour for me to be elected president of the EHA”, declares the specialist, highlighting a few priorities of his mandate: “The goal of the association is the improvement of healthcare to haematological patients, through the promotion of education, research and advocacy of hematologic causes. Along the next two years, I will seek to promote the mobility of haematologists in Europe, through a higher recognition of our educational program and of the European exam, to get increasingly more countries to participate in the association, and to promote the development of research in regions where this is typically less supported”.
