Diogo Alpuim Costa (M.D.) is a PhD Student (Breast Cancer and Microbiota fields) at NOVA Medical School, Coordinator of the Oncology Department and Medical Day Hospital at Hospital de Cascais Dr. José de Almeida, Medical Oncologist at CUF Oncologia and Underwater and Hyperbaric Physician at Centro de Medicina Subaquática e Hiperbárica (CMSH) in Lisbon. Lieutenant Commander Navy Doctor with several national and international naval missions: operational training, search and rescue, medical support to a real scenario of natural catastrophe (Madeira 2010) and as a Head of the Health Department in the Portuguese Navy Tall Ship NRP "Sagres" during the Celebration Programme for the Fifth Centenary of Fernão de Magalhães (Magellan) world´s first Circumnavigation (prematurely interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic).
Diogo Alpuim Costa received the Medical Degree at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa and Postgraduate Education in Pain Management, Sports Medicine and Military Health. He completed the residency in Medical Oncology at Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil, E.P.E., Portugal and held an ESMO Clinical Unit Visit Fellowship (Phase I and Breast Cancer Units) at Vall d'Hebron Institut d'Oncologia, Barcelona, Spain. ESMO Faculty Group for Head and Neck Cancer (2017-2021). Participation in the 13th ECCO-AARC-EORTC-ESMO Workshop "Methods in Clinical Cancer Research", Flims, Switzerland. Experience as an investigator in phase I-III clinical trials, including investigator-initiated studies. Author or co-author of about 50 publications in national and international journals. Peer-reviewer of several journals: Scientific Reports - Nature, Communications Biology, Frontiers in Oncology, Pharmacological Research, BMJ case reports, Case Reports in Oncology, Head & Neck, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Annals of Translational Medicine, American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports, Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine, Acta Médica Portuguesa and Gazeta Médica.
Board-certified in Medical Oncology by the Portuguese Board of Medical Oncology and in Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine by the Portuguese Medical Association. Certified member of several societies and professional organisations (ESMO, ASCO, ESGO, Ordem dos Médicos, SPO and CINAV).
His current investigation aims to introduce microbiota/microbiome analysis as part of the clinical practice to achieve better prevention and early detection of diseases, better-targeted therapy, and even microbiota manipulation to restore the organism´s homeostasis.
