Taking care of yourself is vital for health, happiness, and even a longer life—and vacations, when well-spent, can be a powerful boost in this regard. More important than the destination, the form matters: breaks of at least eight days, filled with enjoyable activities, spending time with loved ones, and being open to unexpected discoveries, help recharge your batteries and give new meaning to life.
Taking care of ourselves is quite beneficial—besides the obvious impact on our well-being, happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and mental health, it's very likely to reduce our risk of coronary heart disease and even help us live longer. As long as we exclude deterministic philosophical perspectives, taking care of ourselves also has the enormous advantage of being in our own hands. It's perfectly possible to decide to play golf, iron, talk to loved ones, eat the best meal in the world at our parents' house, cook one for our grandchildren, or even ask someone to scratch our backs.
And what about vacations? Are they also a way of taking care of ourselves?
