Since January 1st, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central (CHULC) has been the Unidade Local de Saúde São José.

The new organization is the result of the merger, by aggregation, of the CHULC, the Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa, the Instituto de Oftalmologia Dr. Gama Pinto, the Agrupamento de Centros de Saúde de Lisboa Central and the Centro de Saúde de Sacavém.

ULS São José's direct area of influence now covers 13 parishes in the municipality of Lisbon and four in the municipality of Loures, corresponding to a total of 384,774 residents and 440,012 registered in primary health care units.

The provision of hospital care corresponds to a capacity of more than 1,500 beds. In terms of primary health care, ULS São José has 28 Personalized Health Care and Family Health Care Units, as well as five other functional units. In total, the number of health professionals at ULS São José exceeds 10,000.

The ULS's main lines of action have been defined as:

  • Response to acute illness;
  • Domiciliary care;
  • Primary Health Care and Screening;
  • Management of the complex chronic patient;
  • Teaching and research.
