Professional Summary:
Lucilia holds a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra (2000), a postgraduate qualification in Marketing from IPAM (2002), a Master’s degree in Community Pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (2005), and a PhD in Life Sciences, specialising in Functional Sciences and Therapeutic Targets – Pharmacology, from NOVA Medical School, NOVA University Lisbon (2015).
She has over 20 years of teaching experience in Pharmacology, Therapeutics, and the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease. Her academic career includes teaching positions at both public and private higher education institutions, namely NOVA Medical School | Faculty of Medical Sciences, NOVA University Lisbon, where she was an Invited Assistant Professor in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine and the PhD Programme in Medicine; Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, where she was an Invited Assistant Professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences programme; and Escola Superior de Saúde Ribeiro Sanches (ERISA), where she was an Invited Assistant Professor in the Nursing, Pharmacy, and Radiology programmes.
She is currently Coordinator of the Pharmacology Curricular Unit and Assistant Professor at Católica Medical School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (CMS-UCP).
Her professional career also includes extensive research experience, particularly in experimental pharmacology and animal research. She was awarded a PhD fellowship by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), participated as a researcher in several projects funded by FCT and other national and international institutions, and was a member of the Translational Pharmacology research group at CEDOC – Centre for the Study of Chronic Diseases, Lisbon. Between 2008 and 2018, her research focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying some of the most prevalent chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnoea, using both human studies and animal models. Her work also addressed the identification of novel therapeutic targets and the optimisation of pharmacological treatment strategies. This research resulted in numerous publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, as well as a substantial number of scientific communications, including oral presentations, invited lectures, and poster presentations, at national and international conferences.
More recently, she joined the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health (CIIS), a research unit of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where her research has focused primarily on Medical Education, particularly the development and evaluation of innovative approaches and tools to optimise the teaching and learning of Pharmacology in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Throughout her academic career, she has served as a member of academic examination and assessment committees in the field of Pharmacology and has supervised clinical and academic placements for medical students, as well as Master’s and PhD students. She is a member of several scientific societies and regularly serves as a peer reviewer for international indexed scientific journals.
