Raquel Oliveira
(from September 2022)
Biosketch
RA Oliveira studied Biochemistry at FCUP (Porto). Her PhD, under supervision of Prof. Claudio Sunkel (IBMC, Porto and Univ. Bayreuth, Germany), was awarded in 2007 by Univ. Coimbra (BEB PhD program). She did her post-doc work at Dept. of Biochemistry, Univ. of Oxford (UK), with Prof. Kim Nasmyth. Since 2012 RA Oliveira has been a group leader at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and was recently elected as an EMBO member. From September 2022, RA Oliveira will be an Associate Professor at Católica Medical School and a group leader and vice-director of the Católica Biomedical Research Centre.
Chromosome Dynamics Lab
The Oliveira lab studies how chromosome architecture contributes to faithful genome segregation. Our goal is to uncover how mitotic chromosomes assemble, how their structure influences DNA-based processes (e.g. transcription), and, ultimately, on how failures in these processes compromise mitotic fidelity, cell physiology and organism development. We aim to identify novel routes to genome instability that underlie several human diseases, such as developmental disorders, cancer and infertility.
