Wednesday, July 12, 2023 - 17:30 to 19:00
Microbiota

Open session to Health Professionals and the General Public

Hospital da Luz Lisboa, Auditório

12 July 2023, 5.30-7.00pm

Millions of microbes live in our bodies – the microbiota. While a few microbes can cause us disease, most are not pathogenic, but influence our health. In these lectures world leaders in the study of the microbiota will discuss the importance of these microbes to our health and medicine.

The event will be in English.

Free entry, but registration required:

Programme:

Welcome reception

Martin Blaser, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA.

“Health consequences of perturbing the early-life microbiome”

Martin Blaser serves as the Henry Rutgers Chair of the Human Microbiome and as Director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine at Rutgers Univ. His current research interest focuses on the role of the human microbiome in early life development and the mechanisms of diseases. Martin Blaser wrote the book “Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues”.

Isabel Gordo, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal

" Drivers of antibiotic resistance and the effect of the microbiome”

Isabel Gordo is a Principal Investigator at the IGC. Isabel combines theoretical and empirical work to understand the major forces shaping variation in bacterial populations. Her research focuses on the evolution of commensal E. coli in the mammalian gut.

Rob Knight, University of California San Diego, CA, USA.

“The microbiome in cancer”

Rob Knight is a Professor at UCSD. Rob studies evolution of the composition of metabolites, genomes, and communities in different ecosystems, including the complex microbial ecosystems of the human body. He has developed main computational and experimental techniques used worldwide to study these processes. He also wrote the book “Follow Your Gut: The Enourmous Impact of Tiny Microbes”.
