Ethics and Laboratory Safety

Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students):

The objectives of the curricular unit are to provide students with a set of skills for the work of laboratory scientific research in any area of health. The aim is thus to prepare scientists with solid and clear knowledge of laboratory safety and sensitivity to the ethical issues associated.

The student should develop skills in the following areas:

  • awareness of the risks of each laboratory according to its nature;
  • protection of users in any type of laboratory;
  • knowledge of good laboratory practices;
  • laboratory hygiene and safety issues;
  • safe storage, transportation and management of samples;
  • ethical issues associated with laboratory work;
  • ethical issues associated with the use of laboratory animals;
  • registration of laboratory results, and scientific confidentiality.

Syllabus:

  • Introduction to laboratory safety;
  • Biological risk assessment;
  • Essential requirements for the organization of a laboratory;
  • Biosafety principles;
  • Laboratory biosafety level criteria;
  • Management of the biosecurity program;
  • Biological threats and laboratory biosafety principles;
  • Ethics in laboratory practice;
  • Record of laboratory results and scientific confidentiality.
