Introduction to Biomedical Research

This elective CU is a part of the training offer in the 2nd year.

Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students)

he objective of this CU Elective is to introduce students to the application of the scientific method to biomedical research. Specifically, students will learn how state of the art methodologies implemented in FM are used to ask and answer relevant scientific questions. At the end of this CU students will understand the importance of scientific method based learning for medical research and clinical practice.

 

Syllabus

Introduction to the scientific method:

  • identification of cientific question/hypothesis;
  • research strategy planning;
  • choice of techniques to use;
  • appropriate Material Choices / Samples.

Introduction to state of the art laboratory techniques:

  • high resolution microscopy;
  • flow cytometry;
  • molecular biology: PCR, quantitative PCR, sequencing;
  • bioinformatics;
  • laboratory animal models.

Scientific writing:

  • keeping a lab notebook;
  • preparing a project report.
