This course unit is transversal across the first year of the curriculum.
Within the framework of the PRR Digital4Health Portugal – UCP project, this course unit incorporates equipment and digital environments funded by the PRR — SAM 4G, Butterfly iQ+, and the ScanLab™ module —, with the components introduced and the way they are used by students described in the Course Contents and Teaching Methodologies sections of this Syllabus.
The overall aim of this course unit is to promote students’ personal and professional development by using information continuously gathered through the learning and assessment processes of the other course units in the same curricular year. The course unit uses high-fidelity mannequins and takes place in a digital learning environment.
Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students)
The CU’s main goal is to promote students’ personal and professional development by using information gathered throughout the learning and assessment activities of all CUs during the curricular year.
It has the following specific objectives:
i. Monitoring and assessment of the CanMEDS competencies development (medical expert, professional, communicator, collaborator, leader/manager, health advocate and scholar).
ii. Obtain the skills needed for lifelong learning, in the framework of personal and professional development, specifically:
- Gain and maintain insight into the development of their knowledge and skills;
- Learn how to learn and how to direct their own learning process;
- Take timely action to solve problem areas;
- Learn to reflect on their own competence development to allow a smooth transition to the clinical phase.
As part of the structured training in physical examination and auscultation and of the introduction of point-of-care ultrasound in the teaching of the physical examination, students also develop competencies in structured physical examination and auscultation and in the acquisition and interpretation of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) images, in a safe simulation environment, before contact with real patients.

- Introduction to using the Personal Portfolio;
- Principles of Medical Professionalism;
- Basic notions of scientific writing;
- Learning experiences resulting from the attendance of the 1st Year CU;
- Analysis and reflection on learning experiences resulting from the frequency of the 1st year CU;
- Communication training and consequent critical reflection on performance with simulated patients (CORE - Consultation and Reflection).
- Structured, repeated training in physical examination and auscultation, including point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), in a safe simulation environment, using equipment and digital environments funded by the PRR Digital4Health Portugal – UCP project (SAM 4G, Butterfly iQ+ and the ScanLab™ module with artificial-intelligence-guided simulation).
