An app created in Portugal can detect skin cancer using (just) a photograph.

The project was developed by an Iranian student studying at the Católica Medical School, under the Refugee Student Support Initiative.

Photographing a mole may be enough to determine whether or not a skin lesion presents a risk of becoming cancerous.

The analysis of the photograph, symptoms, and patient characteristics is performed by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm integrated into the Dermamatica platform.

It was developed in Portugal by Iranian Sam Izadloo, a student at the Católica Medical School where he has been studying for four years.

“I was studying Medicine in Ukraine, but then the war broke out and I wanted to continue my studies and graduate. (…) I looked for a university all over Europe, but there were always complications because of the war, and I ended up discovering the scholarship program at the Católica Medical School, I applied and ended up getting in,” Sam tells SIC.
