Sofia Almada finished her medical degree in 1997 in Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. She is an Ophthalmologist consultant (Assistant Graduate) and holds a Master’s in “Neoplastic, vascular and inflammatory diseases of the retina” by the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona/Instituto Barraquer. After 2000, she began to serve as a military doctor in the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF), and over the years, she got her certification in class 1 & 2 EASA (European Authority for Safety in Aviation) and took the Advanced Course on Aviation Medicine by the European Air Group.

She is now the president of the Aeronautic Medicine Competency in the Portuguese Medical Association and was also involved in the creation of that competency. She is a founding member of SMAPor, the Portuguese Aerospace Medicine Society, of which she was the first general secretary from 2017 until 2023.

Sofia has worked in aviation medicine for over twenty years as a Flight Surgeon at the PoAF and an ophthalmologist at PoAF and Hospital da Luz- Setúbal. For five years, Sofia was the Portuguese Principal Panel member for the Human Factors and Medicine Group of NATO - Science and Technology Organization. From 2017 to 2021, Sofia was the vice president of the Ethical Committee of the Health Directorate of PoAF, and from 2009 to 2010 was a member of the Infection Control Committee of the Air Force Hospital. She is the former chief of the Department for Training and Prevention of Aviation Medicine Centre of PoAF and the director of the Pos-graduate course on Aeronautic Medicine of the Air Force Academy for several years. Currently, she is a professor of human limitations in aviation at Lusophone University in Lisbon. She is regularly invited to lecture at several Portuguese universities about aerospace medicine and has co-authored articles and book chapters.

At present, she is the Chair of the Scientific Committee of ICAM 2024 (International Congress on AeroSpace Medicine), which will take place in Lisbon from the 3rd to the 5th of October 2024.
