Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), through its Institute of Bioethics, participated in the final meeting of the European project SE4RA – Teaming for Self-Evaluation in Research Assessment Across Scales, held on August 25th in Ankara, Türkiye, and dedicated to transforming research assessment practices.

Hosted by TOBB University of Economics and Technology (TOBB ETÜ), the meeting brought together project partners to present results, share experiences from the implementation of self-evaluation tools, and reflect on the challenges of responsible research assessment.

UCP was represented by Mara de Sousa Freitas, Director of the Institute of Bioethics and Associate Professor at the Católica Medical School, who presented the institution’s journey under the theme “From Self-Evaluation to Institutional Change”.

UCP’s participation in SE4RA enabled the translation of principles of ethics, integrity, transparency, and equity into practical tools for institutional reflection and improvement. Among the key outcomes was the development of an approach that distinguishes researchers’ responsibilities from institutional responsibilities and prioritises institutional maturity and continuous improvement over models focused exclusively on metrics and rankings.

The Ankara meeting marked the conclusion of an international collaborative journey that strengthened UCP’s capacity to contribute to a more responsible, ethical, and values-driven research culture, in a scientific landscape increasingly shaped by data and Artificial Intelligence.
