Isaura has a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra, where she also did her Master looking at the neuroprotective role of ghrelin and leptin in hippocampal neurons. Then she later received her PhD in Neuroscience from University of Manchester, UK in 2015 where she focused on blood brain barrier and high-fat diets in a triple animal model of Alzheimer´s disease. She then returned to Portugal as a postdoctoral Fellow at Instituto de Medicina Molecular, where she implemented the mouse contusion model of spinal cord injury at Dr. Leonor Saúde Lab. At the same time, she finished the Spinal Cord Injury Training Program from The Ohio State University, USA in 2017. In 2024 she established the Neurotrauma Lab in Católica Medical School, where she aims to understand how vascular and perivascular cells can contribute and modulate repair after Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury.
