Phd in Bioethics

Program Description

phd in bioethics

The PhD in Bioethics at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, offered by the Institute of Bioethics in partnership with Católica Medical School and the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing, is an advanced academic and scientific research programme designed to address the ethical challenges arising from developments in science, technology, and contemporary societies.

Adopting a transdisciplinary approach, the programme fosters dialogue across different fields of knowledge, including Medicine, Health Sciences, Philosophy, Law, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Political Sciences, encouraging critical reflection on the ethical challenges affecting human life, society, and the environment.

The programme is developed in collaboration with different academic units of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, seeking to integrate scientific, humanistic, and social perspectives into Bioethics research.

Over the course of three years, students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and develop independent research skills, with a particular focus on emerging challenges in Bioethics, including artificial intelligence, new technologies, human rights, sustainability, social justice, and global health.

Through an educational approach that combines theoretical foundations, research methodologies, and practical application, the PhD in Bioethics aims to contribute to the production of original scientific knowledge, promoting ethically responsible science guided by the common good.
