Carolina Vieira, a researcher at the Biomedical Research Center (CBR) of the Católica Medical School, has been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) postdoctoral fellowship, one of approximately 40 awarded to host institutions in Portugal.
 

The project focuses on the study of parasites of the genus Trypanosoma, responsible for neglected diseases such as Chagas disease and African animal trypanosomiasis, with the aim of understanding the mechanisms they use to infect the organism and identifying potential therapeutic targets.

The researcher's work will focus, in particular, on the parasite Trypanosoma vivax and how it interacts with the host's blood vessels, a process associated with the severity of the disease. Unlike other parasites, T. vivax can adhere to the walls of blood vessels, contributing to organ damage.
