There are stories that stay with us forever. For Sam Izadloo, a medical student at Católica Medical School and founder of Dermamatica , it was the story of a patient whose husband noticed a lesion behind her ear that wouldn't heal.
The couple went to their family doctor, but were unsure how to proceed. The delay in referral to a doctor/treatment slowed the process. When the patient finally saw the dermatologist , the lesion had already progressed, and the treatment ended up being much more aggressive "than would have been necessary."
It was from this episode that the Iranian student concluded that the worst outcomes in skin cancer stem not only from the biology of the disease, but also from clinical uncertainty, limited access to specialists, and delays in referral. What if it were possible to intervene earlier in this chain of care?She was not an exception. Studies show that a significant number of melanomas are not identified at the first primary healthcare visit, the medical student points out.
