RESEARCH DAY IN DIGESTION AND DEFENSE I

We are pleased to invite the academic community to this session where first-year students will present and discuss research on various pertinent viral topics. This meeting will serve as an excellent opportunity to explore contemporary issues in virology and public health and foster scholarly discussion among students and faculty. The topics to be presented include:

  1. Poliovirus and Vaccination;
  2. Rotaviruses and Vaccination;
  3. Gastric Manifestations of Influenza A and SARS-CoV-2;
  4. Wastewater Surveillance for Viral Outbreaks;
  5. Dysbiosis Caused by Viruses and its Impact on Health

After the presentations, there will be two keynote speakers illustrating other topics that can be brought for discussion:

Isabel Gordo - "Bacteria Evolution in the Mammalian Intestine"

and

José Lourenço - "The Global Climate-Driven Transmission Suitability of the Dengue Virus"

hosted by Helena Reis, Maria João Amorim and Paula Ravasco

Isabel Gordo is a principal investigator at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Oeiras, Portugal.

She graduated in Physics from the Technical University in Lisbon and received a PhD in Evolutionary Genetics from the University of Edinburgh in 2002.

Her post-doctoral research was carried out at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência where she then became leader of the Evolutionary Biology group in 2004.

Her research combines theoretical and empirical methods aiming at a better understanding of the major forces that shape variation in  microbial populations. Of particular focus are the study of epistasis between antibiotic resistance mutations, the evolution of mutation rates and the genetics of adaptation in mammalian microbiomes.

Her lab uses Escherichia coli as a model organism of bacteria and laboratory mice as a host model system.In 2010 she won a Starting Grant from ERC and in 2023 an ERC Advanced Grant.

She founded the Portuguese Society for Evolutionary Biology in 2014, was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization  (EMBO) in 2017, and of the European Academy of Microbiology in 2019.

José Lourenço is an Ecologist of Infectious Diseases with 19 years of experience working on host-pathogen systems, with particular focus on antigenically variable and mosquito-borne pathogens.

During his DPhil at the Department of Biology (Oxford), he developed and studied mathematical models of transmission, evolution and control of the dengue virus. After 12 years of research and education in the UK, José returned to Portugal in search of opportunities to advance the field of Computational Epidemiology in the country. He is now a Group Leader and Assistant Professor at the Biomedical Research Center (CBR) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Lisbon, Portugal). His Pathogen Population Biology group studies host-pathogen systems through an holistic framework that spans across biological levels, from genetics to the environment.

It specializes in theoretical and data-driven computational approaches that can be used to unravel and test hypotheses related to known and unknown biological mechanisms towards contributing to community health.
